District News: Utica City School District Celebrates the Launch Of “Utica Reads” With A Ceremony At Pixley Playground!

On June 5th, the Utica City School District proudly hosted an official unveiling ceremony of Utica Reads at Pixley Playground to mark the official launch of the program. Utica Reads is a citywide literacy initiative designed to inspire a love of reading and bring free-standing book boxes to neighborhoods across Utica.

This community-wide celebration highlighted the power of unity, literacy, and access. The book boxes, beautifully handcrafted by UCSD’s own Buildings & Grounds workshop team, are now stationed throughout the city and open to the public 24/7—no library card, no due dates, no fees.

“Seeing ‘Utica Reads’ come to life is truly a proud moment for our district and our city,” said Dr. Christopher Spence, Superintendent of Schools. “This initiative is a shining example of what happens when schools, city leaders, and neighbors come together with a shared commitment to literacy and equity. The impact of this program will ripple across generations because, after today, someone might pick up a book from one of these boxes that changes the course of their life.”

The ceremony featured remarks from Dr. Spence and City of Utica Mayor Michael Galime, followed by a chance for community members to explore the new Pixley Playground book box in person. Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon’s staff member, Willmary Febo, presented Dr. Spence with a Certificate of Merit on the Assemblywoman’s behalf.

The excitement and pride were undeniable as our volunteer librarians gathered to celebrate a future in Utica where books are more accessible than ever.

A very special thank you goes to Joe Gardner from Gardner Media. Joe generously supplied over 300 brand new books for children to help us launch these boxes fully stocked. Thank you to the incredible volunteer librarians who jumped at the chance to help create a love of reading throughout our community. This is truly what it means to be #UticaUnited.
